Brewer True Value Hardware in Mamaroneck, which dates back to 1879, will be closing their East Post Road doors over the summer, the owners announced. There has been no announcement about the reasoning behind the closure, which is expected to take effect on July 3.
“Sharing with all....starting tomorrow 5/1 there will be signs posted on a Mamaroneck Landmark for a going out of business sale,” Scott Croce posted on Facebook. “As of July 3, 2019, Brewers Hardware will be closing its doors for good. Please support us in our last few weeks of business. Huge savings throughout the store. Thank you.”
Croce later posted that, “the new company, Safe Harbor does not feel its financially sound enough to maintain. Unfortunately, a few of us are now out of a job.”
R.G. Brewer purchased the store above the harbor on Boston Post Road in 1879. He later expanded his business to include marine supplies in addition to household and builders hardware.
On their website, the company said that “the hardware store and chandlery quickly became the place to go in town, and thus, began a long tradition of personal and professional service for both homeowners and yachtsmen.”
It is not clear what will replace the iconic hardware store. On Facebook, longtime customers expressed their disappointment in the announcement.
“Devastating news,” Lynn Sherrod posted. “Mr. Brewer was a true trailblazer in quietly opening doors once closed to some. He was our first landlord, before purchasing property. Xo”
“That’s sad. It sure is a landmark,” Joe Pampel added. “I still have fond memories of (Mr. Brewer) taking me around the store to help me find all kinds of arcane things. If Brewers didn’t sell it, you didn’t need it.
Susan Nasso said, “It is so heartbreaking. Happening everywhere. It will only get worse. We need to shop at mom and pops stores and even some national chain stores that we grew up shopping at in order to get people away from shopping on the internet. If you aren't bothered by the automation crisis we should be.”
